SSAT Elementary Level – What You Need to Know

The Elementary Level SSAT is for students currently in grades 3-4, applying to attend grades 4-5 next year.  Note that while there is one Elementary Level test, there are different “forms” for 3rd and 4th grade students.

The Elementary Level is a recent endeavor for the SSATB.  It was introduced in the summer of 2012 for a pilot year 2012-2013.  Beginning with the 2013-2014 testing season, the Elementary Level has been available on a regular basis.

The sections are similar to the other levels of the SSAT, only the test is shorter.  There is a verbal section with synonyms and analogies, a reading section with passages and questions, and a quantitative section that has math questions.  These sections are all multiple choice.  There is also a writing sample that is not scored, but a copy is sent to the schools that your child applies to.  It is important to note that 3rd graders can only take the test once in the testing season and 4th graders can only take it twice in a testing season.  (The other levels of the SSAT can be taken multiple times.)

The SSATB has released guides for the Elementary Level SSAT that can be downloaded for free at ssat.org. Test Prep Works does not currently offer any materials for the Elementary Level SSAT.
